Top 10 Most Economical Cars

Top 10 Most Economical Cars

There's a revolution going on in the car industry at the moment. Over the last decade, car manufacturers have been spending a lot of time and money investing in efficiency. The biggest area car manufacturers have looked at is the diesel engine.

Of course, more recently hybrid cars have been growing in popularity. The mix of a petrol engine and electric drive-train has proven a massive hit in the USA, but is it justified?

In this article, I'll look at the top 10 fuel efficient cars avaliable to buy today. I'm not including electric cars because of how rare they are at present, although I'm hoping by this time in 2010 there will be a lot more on the roads.

10. Fiat Panda 1.3 MultiJet 65.7mpg

Ten Most Economical Cars
A popular return of name for Fiat with the return of the Panda. This spacious little city car has amazed people with it's sense of spaciousness. It's a small car that feels big.

The small 1.3 Turbo diesel engine pumps out an impressive 65.7mpg on a combined cycle. There was some shock when this car first arrived at how well it was built. Fiat had a problem with bits breaking from almost new. Yet the Panda gets thumbs up from a lot of people and it help turn the tides for Fiats problems.

9. Fiat 500 MultiJet 67.3mpg

Ten Most Economical Cars
The new kid on the block. Retro is in and everyone is reviving classic cars. The Fiat 500 is obviously the new re-incarnation of the 500 from all those years ago. Using the same 1.3 TD engine from the Panda (above). Due to less weight (only 3 doors) and being a little more aerodynamic, the 500 manages an extra 1.6mpg over the Panda.

A great little car that's a lot of fun to drive. Is a definite contender over the king of retro, the Mini.

8. Renault Clio 1.5 dCi 67.30mpg

8. Renault Clio 1.5 dCi 67.30mpg, Ten Most Economical Cars
Another face lift for the ever popular Renault Clio has appeared, and with it's 80 horse power 1.5TD it has taken the crown of the most fuel efficient Renault of them all.The Clio is one of Renault's best selling cars now, and they keep making it better.

Like the Fiat 500, it's a lot of fun to drive, and like the Fiat Panda
, it's also very roomy with a decent size boot, and 5 comfortable seats. It's looks are fresh up to date and as it's a Renault, is built very well.

7. Citroen C2 1.4 HDi 68.90mpg

Ten Most Economical Cars
The Citroen C2 has been around for a while now, so Citroen have just launched a face lift version of the car. It's a good seller for Citroen, especially with the ridiculous cash back offers Citroen are known for! 68.9mpg comes from the 1.4HDi engine which is an absolute dream.

These well built French cars are on a par with Renault for quality and style. Both of these cars appeal to the youngsters as much as their elders and due to the massive increase in the economy are getting more and more popular.

6. Toyota Aygo 1.4 HDi 68.9mpg

Ten Most Economical Cars
The Toyota Aygo is exactly the same as the Citroen C1. Both use the same 1.4 HDi engine producing a brilliant 68.9mpg. There both a lot of fun to drive while keeping them easy to use. Well built and very reliable will add to the low cost of ownership to make both these cars great sellers in 2009.

The one thing to know about these cars, is there's a slightly cheaper brother to both of them. A 1.4 Petrol version is available for £1000 less, and still pulls 61.4mpg! Yes it costs a little more to run, but the little petrol engine is very capable.

5. Mini Clubman Cooper D 68.9mpg

Ten Most Economical Cars
This is one of the coolest cars out at the moment. Yeah it might have shocked you when you first saw one, but it's growing on you! It's not quiet as economical as the non Clubman version (losing 2.5mpg) but it's worth it for the extra room the Clubman offers you. those extra doors and a real boot really help!

The Clubman is comfortable and spacious, and even though it's growing in popularity, it's not as common as the normal Mini. Get yourself something rare before everyone finds out about this great little car.

4. Skoda Fabia Greenline 68.9mpg

Ten Most Economical Cars
The Skoda Fabia is a great car. Skoda are part of VAG (Volkswagen Automotive Group) so in essence this car is the Volkswagen Polo Blue-Motion, but cheaper and slightly bigger! The slight increase in size means it's heavier so loses out 5.4mpg over it's VAG brothers. But the extra room and smaller cost means it's still a winner.

This is the mark 2 of the Fabia, and is it not a pretty car? It's a Volkswagen, so it's well built and well run for ever.

3. Mini Cooper D 72.4mpg

Ten Most Economical Cars
For the majority of this millennium the Mini Cooper has been a massive success for BMW. It's been one of the coolest cars to own. There small, cute and fun to drive. There maybe some controversy over the looks, and the fact it's more Midi than Mini, yet the sight of one every 30 seconds in any major town or city speaks for itself.

The cooper D has been improved for 2009 and is now part of an very small group of cars to average over 70 mpg. Even with these current diesel prices, that's a lot of mileage for your money!

2. Volkswagen Polo Blue-Motion 74.3mpg

Ten Most Economical Cars
The Polo is another car that's been around for years and is still very popular. Using the same engine and gear ratios as the Skoda and Seat, this daddy of the small VAG cars is a stunner. Amazing fuel economy, great build quality and VAG reliability make it a great car.

It runs joint top with the Seat (below) yet it sits in position 2 because of it's cost. It might still be popular, but being over £1000 more expensive than the Seat means it's not worthy of the number 1 spot.

1. Seat Ibiza Ecomotive 74.3mpg

Ten Most Economical Cars
Yes, the Seat Ibiza is the most economical car out today. using the same engine as the Polo and Fabia, this small little Spanish car is phenomenal value for money. It's a little over £10000 although they can be had for about £8000 if you look and haggle) and with 74.3mpg it will keep the pounds in the bank.

As with all VAG cars, it's well built, reliable and great fun to drive. The new version has just been launched, and Seat have really outdone themselves with the new model. There popping up everywhere.

World's Top 10 Marijuana Travel Destinations

World's Top 10 Marijuana Travel Destinations

World's Top 10 Marijuana Travel Destinations by Danko...

Some places have significantly decriminalized marijuana or have turned a blind eye to personal use, encouraging travelers from around the world to visit.

10. Toronto, Canada

Top 10 Marijuana Travel Destinations in the worldPhoto: Ken Straiton | First Light | Getty Images

"Canada’s Eastern regions boast some excellent marijuana and many businesses on Younge St. (known as 'Youngsterdam' in Toronto) and beyond cater to the cannabis connoisseur," says Danko. Although it is against the law to possess marijuana in Canada, enforcement is focused primarily on individuals guilty of trafficking. Marijuana users in Toronto report that police officers are lenient to those who are discreet.

There are various medical marijuana "clubs" in Toronto, although the majority caters only to Canadian citizens carrying medical cards. Kensington Market, Queen Street West, Scarborough Town Centre and the area surrounding Toronto University are all areas where marijuana use is widespread and vendors easy to come by. "Head shops, smoke-tolerant cafes and pot seed retail stores all vie for the aficionado’s attention," says Danko.

9. Seattle, Washington

Top 10 Marijuana Travel Destinations in the worldPhoto: Getty Images

A top travel destination for marijuana is located in a U.S. state that was an early adopter of legal medical marijuana laws. The laws passed in Washington State eliminate criminal penalties for most uses, as long as the individual has valid documentation from a physician. In addition, earlier this year, Seattle's city attorney announced that all marijuana-possession cases would be dropped and that marijuana-possession cases would no longer be prosecuted, according to the "Seattle Times."

Danny Danko places the city ninth in part because it hosts Seattle Hempfest, the world’s largest pot rally with more than 100,000 people over two days. "Marijuana violations have been a low priority since the current Federal Drug Czar Gil Kerlikowski was the police chief there. Glassblowers hawk their wares throughout the city," he says.

8. Christiania, Denmark

Top 10 Marijuana Travel Destinations in the worldPhoto: Slim Allagui | AFP | Getty Images

This area of Copenhagen has proclaimed itself an autonomous region and is often regarded as a large commune. Locals call it "Freetown Christiania, " Danko says. "Christiania's 'no hard drugs' policy allows pot sales, although its on-again-off-again due to periodic crackdowns." In Denmark the use of marijuana is illegal, but the autonomy of the area has allowed the drug to be sold, despite the government's "normalization" policies.

Danko points to "the main drag called Pusher Street, where pot was sold openly until 2004," and despite the increased government pressure, "hash and skunk stands have returned, albeit quietly."

7. Nimbin, Australia

Top 10 Marijuana Travel Destinations in the worldPhoto: Hector Garcia

"Nimbin is the home of the yearly Nimbin Mardi Grass festival and is basically a hippie paradise," says Danko. Danko describes Nimbin as "a must-see pot destination" with his favorite strain of Australian marijuana: "Mullumbimby Madness." Nimbin, which is located in northern New South Wales, Australia, has been described as a haven for Australia's counterculture, including hippie communes and various types of multiple occupancy residences.

Although marijuana is illegal in the Australian state of New South Wales, Nimbin is notorious for its high tolerance to people using and selling the drugs. In recent years, however, the town’s approach has come under increased scrutiny because of its ballooning popularity as a marijuana destination. For a town with a resident population of 352 as of 2006, the proliferation of marijuana-related institutions alone - The Nimbin Hemp Embassy, The Nimbin HEMP Bar and the Nimbin Museum – reflects the town's immersion into cannabis culture.

6. Portland, Oregon

Top 10 Marijuana Travel Destinations in the worldPhoto: Philip Kramer | The Image Bank | Getty Images

"The city is home to America’s first Cannabis Café and one of the biggest State Chapters of NORML," says Danko, noting that "Portland is also hosting this year’s National NORML conference for the first time." Like in Oakland and Denver, marijuana users carrying small portions of marijuana are low priorities for law enforcement, although fines and jail time are possible for a range of offenses, including dealing, possession, and sale of paraphernalia.

The city has a bohemian feel and a robust marijuana culture, and WeBeHigh.com lists several areas where the drug can be easily purchased, including the waterfront area and the "park blocks."

5. Barcelona, Spain

Top 10 Marijuana Travel Destinations in the worldPhoto: Jeremy Horner | Photographer's Choice | Getty Images

"Privacy laws in Spain are strong and crimes must have victims, meaning no complaint equals no arrest," says Danko, who points out that Barcelona hosts marijuana celebration festivals and industry conventions like “Spannabis” and High Life Expo, while the city's proximity to Morocco guarantees access to high-quality marijuana and hashish. The town's hot spots are in the Las Ramblas area of the city, as well as Plaça Reial and Carrer Escudillers.

According to Drugpolicy.org, Spain was one of the first modern European countries to decriminalize marijuana. Spanish laws allow for citizens to grow and use a small amount of their own marijuana, although public use and the buying or selling of the drug is a criminal offense. They also note that Spanish laws against trafficking are "among the most severe in Europe."

4. Negril, Jamaica

Top 10 Marijuana Travel Destinations in the worldPhoto: Buena Vista Images | The Image Bank | Getty Images

Although marijuana use is illegal in Jamaica, it is generally tolerated if done discreetly. Users of WeBeHigh.com describe the enforcement situation in Negril as relatively non-existent, although marijuana use near police officers is generally a bad idea. Danny Danko highlights Negril for its "pot tourism, sunshine and plentiful weed, reggae music culture, beaches, drinks and spliffs."

The town is also located on a world-class beach that features several all-inclusive resorts and leisure activities. Danko notes that "decent outdoor marijuana can be cheaply acquired by finding the nearest cab driver or Rastafarian."

3. Oakland, California

Top 10 Marijuana Travel Destinations in the worldPhoto: Getty Images

"The area dubbed 'Oaksterdam' has pot-friendly coffee shops, growing equipment stores and even a cannabis college, called Oaksterdam University," says Danko. "Non-profit medical marijuana dispensaries such as Berkeley Patients Group and Harborside provide marijuana as well as free acupuncture, massage, yoga and counseling for their patients."

Oakland's cannabis culture is complimented by the city's relatively laxed enforcement and the state of California's allowance for medical marijuana.

2. Vancouver, Canada

Top 10 Marijuana Travel Destinations in the worldPhoto: Christian Kober | Robert Harding World Imagery | Getty Images

"One trip down 'Vansterdam’s Pot Block' on Hastings Street and you’ll see how rich the cannabis culture is here," says Danko. "Police are mostly tolerant towards pot so coffee shop-type scenes and marijuana seed retailers can be found with little effort."

Smoking in Vancouver is often done in public places like parks as well as private residences. Marijuana is generally available on the street or in "secret" stores that exclusively sell the drug, which is often referred to as "BC Bud" and is revered for its high quality.

1. Amsterdam, Netherlands

Top 10 Marijuana Travel Destinations in the worldPhoto: Allan Baxter | The Image Bank | Getty Images

Danko has selected Amsterdam as his top travel destination, largely because of the "hundreds of "coffee shops where marijuana and hashish can be purchased over the counter and consumed." He points out that Amsterdam "is the home of the Annual High Times 'Cannabis Cup' every November and boasts incredible museums and parks as well as ‘trippy’ architecture perfect for a stoned stroll around town."

Although cannabis is technically an illegal substance in the Netherlands, for more than twenty years, Dutch citizens over age eighteen have been permitted to buy and use cannabis (marijuana and hashish) in government-regulated coffee shops. (This results from the government differentiating between "soft" drugs, such as marijuana, and hard drugs, like cocaine and heroin.) Marijuana is "virtually legal" in Amsterdam, but WeBeHigh.com notes that smoking outside designated areas is frowned upon and personal responsibility is encouraged.
